Creative Clutter Going Awry

Yes, I admit it, more often than not I live by the saying that 'Creative clutter is better than tidy idleness.' Below is an example of this. This is what most of my fabric bins look like. I feel good that I am keeping like colors together. But the other day I was so hopping mad at myself for having to make due with what I could find because I couldn't find what I really wanted. That I did this. Must admit only my blue bin looks like this at the moment. It took quite awhile to fold all that fabric into similar lengths so I could put them in neat rows. I covered my sewing table and ironing board folding and sorting like colors. But I think it was worth it. Now I can see at a glance what I have. Yippee!
With a nice looking blue bin of fabric and a clean sewing area I was able to sew the DNP blocks together and add a border. Next stop Marilyn's for some quilting.
I finished quilting the zig zag yesterday. Fortunately no quilt police were out and about. I may have gotten a QUI (Quilting Under the Influence). No, I was not tipsy. But I was weaving all over this quilt that I was trying to stitch in the ditch. I am getting better at controlling where I want to go, but I still have a lot to learn.
Thanks for spending a moment of your precious time with me. Hope you have a great day.
Em

  1. I don't think I'll see the floor in my sewing room until after Christmas! With all the flannel I've been using it's one big dust bunny in there! Great zig zag quilt.

  2. I have separate bins for each color field as well...and some seasonal bins too. I am right there with you on the sewing in a straight line. My mother, who is an authored seamstress only let me sew on unlined paper till I could sew a measured straight line of at least 12 inches...then I graduated to real fabric!!!

    I love visiting with you!

  5. Doesn't it feel great to get organized? I am impressed you have a blue bin. I don't have much blue fabric, just not a blue person. But I definitely have an appreciation for the color. Loving the zig zag!

  6. Ya know, sometimes you just gotta stop and get organized. It's like a palate cleanser during a fancy dinner. And, that way you can find EXACTLY what you are looking for. And that is good too.

I have my fabric stacked like that on shelves in my sewing room- I just love looking at it. And every 6 months, I "weed out" pieces that have not been used. And either make something out of it, or sell it at the flea market!

  7. I love your saying of 'Creative clutter is better than tidy idleness.' from now on that will be my excuse for the mess in my sewing room..

  8. What a great post. Naturally I love seeing what your real life fabric life is all about. Great to share that, Em. And the DNP looks fantastic. You're quick! Now the Zig Zag with the quilting is warming my heart. I know what that stitching is about. I'm trying it on my little Pfaff and its QUI, too!

All over the place for love, *karendianne.

  10. Wow, I was going to say tidy-ness is over-rated but I think I'm outnumbered so congratulations on sorting out your blues! The DNP looks cozy and the zigzag looks vibrant! I'll have to file QUI away for future reference. It would only come in to play at a Retreat, hmmmm...
    Merry Christmas!

  13. Sometimes getting organized is almost as good as sewing! If I have things tidied up it seems like I want to sew more. :) blessings, marlene

  15. Wish all my fabrics were like your 'blue bin' - I, too, get so frustrated when I can't find a fabric that I know I have!

  16. Beautiful colours in the zigzag quilt. I have a heap of odd bits I keep working from -some tea stain some plain white, scrap of pellam etc, but I have been trying to fold as I go along as it's such a nightmare task. Well done for takling it straight on.

  17. It feels so good to get organized so you can find what you need! It's hard to keep it that way, though. Love that zig zag quilt!

  18. A zig zag should have zig zag quilting! Tell them I said so.

That blue bin looks so nice but if you are like me, will it stay that way. I function better in chaos.......sounds good anyway.

  19. I love the spool garland in your last post...Now I have an idea about what to do with all those empty spools that I hated to throw away, crafter that I am. Now I just need to remember the idea for next year!
