Feeling Liberated

After making my little Farm Fresh quilt and playing with my Crazy Love quilt I'm feeling quite liberated. So at the moment all traditional quilting has flown out the window and scraps are flying while I play in a less formal way. I've made this journal for a friend.

Crazy Love

In my Sew Bee Wonky group I asked for wonky hearts. I was inspired by this quilt by Victoria. It is so fun and with Valentine's Day just around the corner I'm in the mood for love. So I pulled out my wonky hearts and started putting them together. So far this is what I have.

I'm really having fun mixing and matching.

Bounty

Last spring I saw a display of fabulous art quilts at the HMQS show made by a talented group of quilters. I was enthralled with their work and wanted to learn more about it. So in September after taking a class from Lisa, one of their members, and then speaking with their fearless leader, Sylvia at the Utah Quilt Guild Annual Meeting I join. The basis for their little group is that someone picks a word and everyone makes a 12"x12" quilt based on that word. In November it was my turn to pick a word. I chose bounty. It seemed fitting for the month of Thanksgiving. A farmer's market seemed the perfect way to display the bounty of the earth. I made letters to spell out farm fresh and was barely able to make that fit in my allotted 12". I added bins of veggies on top and then made me some fields.

It was fun to finish this up while snow fell outside my window. Sure helped to chase away the January blahs.

Play becomes a Quilt

Well the deadline for Victoria's 15 Minute Play BOM has come. I've been busily making blocks for my quilt for the last week or so. Hoping to have at least a top done. I thought about making enough blocks for a twin size but opted for a throw when DD didn't seem thrilled with it. It's not in her colors. My sweet girl likes things matchy matchy very unlike her mom who says, 'Color doesn't matter. Throw them all in. Everything looks good in a scrap quilt.' I still had to add a few more blocks to get it to a nice throw size. So I played with 1/2 square triangles on this one

Did a monkey's wrench

And a basket

Copied a block I copied from Terry.

Made another flower. The first I had done with a different background.

And a Dutchmen's Puzzle because I can't do a sampler quilt without one. It's one of my all time favorite blocks.

Put them all together with Kona's candy blue for sashing and scrappy corner posts. And wha-la my 15 minutes of play has become a quilt top.

A Quilt With a Story

Earlier in the week I received this quilt for Happy Chemo. Let me share it's story.

It's life began with a young quilter who before she could finish it died of cancer. Her mother, not being a quilter gave the quilt top to Virginia 'Rusty' Hendrick, an award winning hand quilter, past secretary of the NQA, and purveyor of a portable plastic quilt rack, in hopes that her daughter's quilt would be finished. While visiting with Rusty, Carol H, now a member of the Utah Quilt Guild, saw the quilt and admired it. So Rusty gave it to her. She said the ladies faces and Kimonos where askew so she took them apart and redid them.

She backed it, hand quilted it, and bound it. .

Recently she moved from California to Utah and heard about my quilts for Happy Chemo through the Utah Quilt Guild. She felt that this was where this quilt belonged. So she gave it to her area rep, Barbara Murdock who in turn gave it to me. I will give it to my dear friend Ginger. Who will make sure someone struggling with cancer receives this beautiful quilt with a story.

What's Lost is Found

Do you ever get so busy that you lose tack of things? Ever feel like a chicken with it's head cut off? The saying the faster I run the behinder I get ever ring true in your life? In many ways that has been my life recently. And in all this hustle and bustle I lost track of a quilt and my favorite ruler. Scary I know. I thought maybe some over zealous cleaner of my house (not many of those and if they ever do come along it is for a short burst and then they are gone) put it in the pile of Happy Chemo quilts and was donated. So I figured it went to a good cause and went on with my life. So imagine my joy when Ione, from Elaine's Quilt Block called to say they had my quilt. I do remember having it on display there but I thought I had brought it home in May. Boy am I glad I was wrong. So happy to have it safe and sound at home.

Like I said before my favorite ruler had gone missing also. My sewing area was in utter chaos and I hoped it was buried in the mess. As my kids will tell you if one of their things goes missing I tell them to clean until they find it. Remember I told you those zealous cleaners don't happen very often at my house? So I decided to put my own advice to work and headed into the battle zone that was my sewing room and went to work. I went through all my books.

Please excuse my unfinished walls, after doing our kitchen a few years back and not being able to cook I'm hesitant to doing my sewing room. I think I would go insane if I couldn't sew every day. So I'll wait until someone moves out and I can take over their room while we finish my sewing room. I organized all my UFOs.

Sorted all my fabric.

Found my missing ruler and put it back in it's home.

See my children would be wise to listen to me. And now all the creative clutter is put in it's place and I'm ready to start the process over again.

Stitch in Color

I have always love Malka's beautiful hand dyed fabrics. They are so bright and happy. I'm thrilled that Moda has taken them and made the Stitch in Color line. I did a happy dance when I was able to get my hands on some and play with it. First I made a little baby quilt. I think these bright bold prints are perfect for a baby quilt. Especially for a little boy. Now I just need to find a baby boy.

Then I made some braids, that I turned into banners. Placed them on a rock wall. Well, sorta, I quilted a rock wall into the fabric and Banners of Color was born.

Thanks Malka for designing this fun fabric. I've so enjoyed playing with it.

A Day of Play

My day of play started Saturday with a bin of scraps.

That I made into fabric using Victoria's method.

To create these blocks.

To go with these blocks.

That I need to figure out how to arrange and have put into a quilt real soon for the 15 minute play BOM. I'm thinking I still want a few more blocks and some sashing. Will I have a quilt in time? That is a very good question. Better schedule a few more days of play.

Free For All Step 3

The rush of holiday sewing is behind us. I hope you got everything done that you needed to. So as promised the final step for the Free For All block is here. Cut 112- 4 1/2" squares for 56"x 64" quilt that is shown in the link. (You are more than welcome to adjust this and make whatever size quilt you would like.) Take a 4 1/2" square and place it next to one of the units made in step 2. Make sure that you line up the chain pieces (here the black squares) the same way every time. Place these rights sides together and sew together.

Take two of the above units, lining up the chain, place right sides together, pin in center and sew.

Repeat process for remaining blocks. 56 total is doing quilt size shown in link.

Arrange as desired. Suggestions here. When your finished be sure to let me know. I would love to see it. And share it here with your permission. If you don't have a blog just send me a photo. I really want to see your interpretation.

Evaluation

January is the perfect time to evaluate how we are doing. A time to see how far we have come and decide what we want to work on in the future. In looking back it was a good year for quilts. Here is a collection of many of my 2011 finishes.

I didn't finish everything on the list I create each year to help me keep track of my WIPs. I didn't think I would. But I finished quite a few and even completed a few that were not on the list.

Now looking to the future a new list has been created.

Our family has set a few goals. We will be going to our local rec center every night. My hubby and I are hoping this will accomplish two things; family unity and slimmer waist lines. Not that our children need this. They are skinny as rails but he and I could improve here.

What goals have you set for the new year? Whatever they are I wish you the best with them.

Quilty love for the new year

Look at all the pretty quilts that have been donated in the last weeks of the year. The yellow one was tied by a group of cub scouts. Thanks guys! Didn't they do a great job? The two on the ends where donated by members of the Utah quilt guild and the one with the teddy bear by my dear friend Marilyn.

These three were donated by members of the Layton Quilters. Good work ladies

The Winken, Blinken, and Nod was donated by the lovely Vivian. The other three were joint efforts by many. The string quilts were made at many Happy Chemo sew ins, put together by Shari and Nicki and quilted and bond by me.

Thank you everyone for your generosity. I didn't make my goal for the year so I'm extending the time. I don't want to lower the number. Hoping to keep the quiltometer rising in the new year.

Oh Christmas Tree

In one of my bees this month I got to make these cute triangle blocks. We used this tutorial from FITF.

I thought they looked like the perfect little Christmas trees. And I need to make a few pillows for and exchange. So I grabbed some leftover strips of Ruby from I project I had made earlier. Threw in a few others from the scrap bin and made a long strip that I cut the triangles from. After adding the sides on my trees, I added a trunk and made these festive Christmas pillows.

Yesterday I finished up my shopping. I have a few things left to wrap. So I'm declaring today a pajama day to relax. And enjoy all my Christmas prep. Hope you find a few moments to relax and enjoy this special season.

Exciting News

Thanks to the generosity of others the quiltometer is rising. To date 346 quilts have been donated to Happy Chemo to be given to cancer patients. And I know of several other quilts that are in the works.

In an effort to keep up with the generous donations of scraps and tops, I have now made a $1 down load page on my website. All proceeds will go to buying background fabric, backing, and batting for more Happy Chemo quilts.

Fabulous Festive Day

Yesterday was a fabulously festive day. The Layton Quilters had their Christmas party and we celebrated the fact that we have been a guild for 20 years. We had past presidents come and be honored. There was a pillow exchange. I received this cute little snowman pillow from my dear friend, Jean, one of your founding members.

Gifts were exchanged. I love this stitchery I received from Michelle. Though it has quite a stir at my home. DD asked me why it said sexy. Her friend thought the same thing. As did my hubby. I guess I'm just a sexy sewer. hee hee.

I also received this clever gift; a recipe holder made out of a spool.

And this gorgeous fabric.

It was a wonderful party. I 'sew' enjoy my quilting buddies.

Then later that night I was invited to go to the Mormon Tabernacle Christmas Concert. It was amazing. The music, stories, and dancing made for an unforgettable performance. There was an organ solo that I absolutely loved. Watching the organists feet dance on the pedals on the big screen was delightful. If you get the chance to go I would so recommend you do. If you can't make a note to yourself to watch it next year on PBS you won't be disappointed.

I hope all your holiday festivities are going well.

Home for the Holidays

While perusing blogs I found the cutest little house ornaments at Pink Chalk Studio. Pink Chalk is always full of fun ideas but this Christmas season they are especially loaded. Lots of gift ideas along with fun decorations to make your home festive. Make sure you stop by and get your creative juices flowing.

Anyway back to the cute houses. I fell instantly in love and knew I had to make some. So I followed the link to a very well written tutorial by Retro Mama. Grabbed my scrap bins and created a little neighborhood of my own.

They were fun and easy to make. So if you happen upon a few extra minutes this holiday season and are in need of a few quick gifts or extra decorations for your tree. I recomend these little cuties.

Christmas Quilts

One of my favorite things about Christmas is making and enjoying Christmas quilts. Whether your curling up on the couch with a good book, cuddling with a loved one, enjoying a cup of cocoa while admiring the lights on your Christmas tree, or watch a classic Christmas movie; it is the perfect time of year to snuggle under a quilt made with love.

So without further ado I share with you a few of my Christmas quilts. First, The Twelve Rows of Christmas. Hung in my front window since I have no one to hold it up for me. They have all left for their various activities of the day.

Next a Christmas Star, the week before Christmas everyone in our family will get a chance to sleep under this quilt to ensure all their Christmas dreams come true.

Then we have A Santa on Every Corner, made with blocks from Nanette's exchange a few years back. A reminder of all my wonderful bloggy neighbors.

Next, Oh Christmas Tree with an added memory, DD signed it when she was four. I was mad when it happened now it just makes me smile.

Up Close

You all know of my talented sister, Julie. What you might not know is that I have two equally talented sisters, Lori and Becky. Lori is a fabulous cook. Who, by the way, made a fabulously scrumptious Thanksgiving dinner for our family. Becky is a very talented photographer. Who recently did a segment on Daily Dish on how to use your point and shoot camera. Following her very helpful tips I took these pictures.

A Little Chemistry

Julie's new line for Moda is called Chemistry. It is full of pretty pinks, radiant reds, a beautiful brown. Great for a Valentine quilt. I know it's a little early to be thinking about that but this line caught my heart. The ideas began to stir in my head. There was a little bubble, bubble, toil and not to much trouble to create Chocolate Cherry Kiss.

I've been quilting it and soon I hope to have it finished.

Working Together

Working with my sister, Julie, is something I truly enjoy. Combining our talents and feeding off each other it is fun to watch a project come to fruition. When we first started working with Julie's Salt Air line she sent me some quilt ideas. The one below she liked but didn't know if we could make it into a quilt since she could not get everything to line up on the computer.

I knew it was possible. I had done something similar with a stack and whack a few years back. But I thought writing a pattern for it might be difficult. I asked her if we could simplify the background. She gave the go ahead and Sea Stars was born.

I love this quilt! The giant stars just speak to me. I love snuggling up in it. I so wish I could have got it done for market. But if you remember from this post I was a little busy with the other quilts. Well things have slowed down a bit and Sea Star is now done. The pattern is now available through Untied Notions and on my website, along with the rest of the Salt Air quilts featured at fall market.

You may Have Seen Us In the News

You may have seen my little town of Centerville, Utah on the news yesterday. It was a little windy here. In fact wind gusts hit over 100mph in our neck of the woods. Family and friends tried to get a hold of me but phone lines were down and the power was out and sadly my cell phone was dead. So I was oblivious to that. Instead DD and I watched out our front window while this tree blew over and our shingles flew pel-mel. We also made bracelets from the previous post until we ran out of buttons. And enjoyed sitting in front of the fire.

Just down the street this poor family's cars were covered by trees.

Trampolines went to visit the neighbors. Sheds blew away. It was quite a mess.

But as the winds died down my wonderful neighbors came out to check on one another and help with the clean up. So despite the winds this is a pretty great place to live.

Personalized Type Key Bracelet

Christmas is coming and finding the perfect gift can sometimes be hard. How about a personalized bracelet?

This one if simple and quick to make. A bonus when lists grow long and time is short.

You will need:

Moda's Circa 1934 type key fabric available at the Fat Quarter Shop

chain

clasp

5/8 or 3/4" covered buttons use smaller one if your name is longer and larger ones if your name is shorter (bought here)

needle nose pliers

First cut out the letters in the name you will be putting on your bracelet. Make sure you have enough extra fabric to cover your button.

Center your letter over the button and following the button covering instructions make your buttons

Measure a length of chain big enough for your wrist. Open the ends of your chain using the needle nose pliers.

Insert the clasps and close up the chain.

Center your name on the chain.

Using the needle nose pliers open link for first letter based on where you centered it, insert the shank of the button inside link (make sure your letter is facing the right way and close link. Repeat with remaining letters.

Now your ready to share your gift.

Or sport your own. Which is what I did so as to keep people guessing what their gift may be.

Ho Ho Ho

I was able to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday at my parents. I had a delightful time with my brother and sisters and their families. Isn't family a wonderful thing!?

While there I was able to see my mom's newest creations. My mom is an amazing artist. She carves Santas. This hutch contains only a few of her creations.

Isn't Thanksgiving a wonderful holiday. Gathering with friends and family to rejoice in the bounty we have been blessed with. I thought it the perfect time to get to share with you my family reunion quilt again. I simply love this quilt! The people I love most and some very special memories are captured forever in its stitches.

This holiday weekend I plan on making a few more of those precious memories while feasting on too much turkey and pumpkin pie.

Fabulous Free Four All

I was so thrilled to see one already finished I asked if I could post it here. Didn't she do a lovely job? I'm always a sucker for a scrap quilt and this one is no exception. All those scraps playing so nicely together is just lovely. Pg you did a beautiful job. Thanks for letting me share.

Let the Finishing Begin

I've got me a pretty big stack of tops. I don't usually collect flimsies. When I get a top done I get rather excited. I know a finish is just around the corner. But for some reason lately these have been piling up.

So I ran across the street to my quilting neighbor, Pauline, she lets me store my batting there. You see her home is a little less crowded than mine so a bolt of batting fits at her house, where it doesn't at mine. We cut of 8 yards of batting. That should keep me busy for a little while. Let the finishing begin.

A slight dilemma

I've been wanting to make a new quilt for my son, Josh's bed. I decided on a block and picked out fabrics. I sent off 11 packages to the ladies in my Twice as Nice Bee. Well their lovely blocks have started arriving at my house. So I thought I should get busy and make a few of my own.

I'm really liking how they are coming together. I'm a little concerned about the block with the pink piece in it. It really is a nice block. Pieced perfectly. And it is probably somewhat my fault the pink piece ended up in the quilt. I did not make it clear that this quilt was for my son. I sent some Kaffe and Amy Butler that had bits of pink in them with the fabric packs I sent out. And told the ladies that they could add some of their own fabric to add variety to the blocks. I guess I could add more pink so it was a lone rider in the quilt. But I'm not sure how Josh would feel about that.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

Bountiful Harvest

A few weeks ago I had the lovely opportunity to teach my Harvest Sky quilt to the talented Roy Quilters. It was a delightful day. I made new friends and got to see a few friends I hadn't seen in years. Well they invited me to their meeting last week so I could see their beautiful quilts that came about as a result of the class. So without further a do here's a little eye candy.

First up is Sue's rendition in Halloween fabrics. If you look close you will see fussy cut witches, skeletons, and other spooky creatures.

Next up is Yvonne's in beautiful fall colors.

Then Ann Marie's scrap happy one. I just love all the fun fabrics in this one.

This next one is from my dear friend Pat. I hadn't seen her in quite some time. It was so good to see her again. I will always remember the beautiful quilted bibs I received in the mail the morning my DD was born over 11 year ago. With all the complications that came with that pregnancy she will never know the comfort a joy that small gift meant to me.

It was a pleasure to meet this next quilter. She is so talented. Don't you just love all the beautiful reds, greens and golds she used in her quilt.

I met Denise when my children were small at a school function. She was working on a quilting project. We started talking and I invited her to my local quilt guild and we've been friend ever since. Isn't her quilt just lovely.

The next three quilts are from some special ladies that took me under their wing when I first started quilting and helped me get to where I am today. First Lorretta isn't her jewel tone quilt stunning.

Next LaRae this quilt came entirely from her stash. Wow! I want a stash like hers.

And last but definitely not least. Jean, the only one who didn't hide behind her quilt.

Didn't they all do a lovely job? I sure think so. Thanks ladies for inviting me to teach. And then having me back to see your lovely work.

Leader and Enders step 2

I know I'm a week late with this post. But the tsunami set me back a little. And while I'm still behind in making all my little four patches. I don't want to keep anyone waiting if they are ready to go on. Besides I hope to catch up soon. So here is the next step.

Take your 224 2 1/2" four patches from step one.

Cut 224- 2 1/2" squares of medium to dark scraps.

Sew a 2 1/2" four patch to a 2 1/2" square making sure that each time your chain squrares ( the black ones here) are going the same way. This important as your chain will be broken in your quilt if you don't. Do this with the remaining four patches and 2 1/2" squares.

Next sew the units you made above together to create the chain though your new four patch. Contiue making chain four patches with your remaining units.

With the holidays coming and all the hustle and bustle that comes with them, I'll be waiting until the first of January to post the next step. Happy Sewing!

Bee Inspired

I had so much fun with this months bee blocks. And they have inspired me to start a few new quilts of my own.

I loved making thes Japanese x and +. In fact it was hard to stop. Hence the reason I made four for Michelle. I might have made her whole quilt but I ran out of the background fabric for the x's. I'm now looking through my scraps and planning my own x and + quilt.

These striking blocks for Ann are making think I need to make an all solids quilt. She has a great tutorial here.

And these fun little guys for Christine will be borders and sashing for the blocks we made for her in a previous round. I just love pieced borders and can't wait to see here quilt completed.

Salt Air

Do you remember the tsunami I had in my sewing room recently? Well here are the results beautifully displayed in Moda's booth. Don't you just love the old sewing machine and Julie's little mermaid?

It was a ton of work to get these done. In fact, two of them were cut out, pieced, sandwiched, basted, quilted, and bond all in a matter of four days. My machine was smokin'!

Sisters and Girlfriends

I don't know why this didn't work the first time. So lets try again.

It's National Girlfriends and Sister's Week and I just had to share this email my mom sent to me. It made me laugh and I wanted to share.

I don't want to brag or make anyone jealous or anthing, but I can still fit into the earrings I wore in high school.

I am only as strong as the coffee I drink, the hairspray I use, and the friends I have. To the cool women who have touched my life. Here's to you

It is good to be a woman:

1. We got off the Titanic first.

2. We can scare male bosses with mysterious gynecological disorder excuses.

3. Taxis stop for us.

4. We don't look like a frog in a blender when dancing.

5. No fashion faux pas we make could ever rival the Speedo

6.We don't have to pass gas to amuse ourselves.

7. If we forget to shave, no one has to know.

8. We can congratulate our teammate without ever touching her rear end.

Perfect Circle

There are times when you need the perfect circle on your quilt. Blocks like drunkards path and Dresden plates are a couple of examples.

Or sometimes it's just fun to make a circle block.

If the perfect circle eludes you; here is a little trick that may help.

First cut the size of circle you need for your block out of card stock. Or you can recycle an old cereal or cracker box.

Next place your card stock circle on top of your fabric and cut a generous 1/2" seam allowance all the way around.

Then set your sewing machine stitch to its greatest length and stitch a 1/4" all the way around your fabric circle.

Gather just until the edges start to turn up on your circle.

Then place your card stock circle in the center of your fabric circle and continue to gather until your fabric circle encases your card stock circle.

Press using steam to set edge of circle.

Pop out your card stock circle. Place your fabric circle where you need it on your block and top stitch in place.

And there you have it a perfect circle.

Oh What a Ride

Last Sunday DD, N and I loaded up the car and headed to Cali for some fun at Disney. The rest of the family had work and school, a bit of a bummer. We found our laughing place on Splash Mountain.

Had a jolly holiday on the Carousel.

Got a little loony in Toon Town.

And even had a little nightmare before Halloween.

We also spent a little time at the beach, one of my favorite places on earth.

We had a wonderful time. Now to catch up on every one's comments from last week and visit a few blogs to see what's new.

Soaring

N is finishing up his leadership hours required for his Eagle. So I've been finishing up his Eagle quilt. He decided he wanted a few more eagles on his quilt. So we added a couple more. Then I added borders.

Now I'm looking forward to putting to good use a few of the things I learned in my machine quilting class.

Recently I was given two large boxes of fabric. In it I found these lovely brights and blacks. Since this is a favorite color combo for me I knew something had to be done with them. So I took them to a recent Happy Chemo Sew In where my friend Diane cut them into squares, Shari sewed them into blocks and I sent them with my friend Suzy to take to the next step.

The order called for a nine patch of bright made fabric. I chose pink

Add to another bright batik like fabric. I chose this.

Next I sewed my pinks together into made fabric.

Kept adding until I had enough for two blocks.

Cut both fabrics into squares and filled the order.

Yummy!

Bee Happy

I just received my last block from my Notion or Two Bee. Isn't it so cute. Love this little house with the palm tree. I'm invisioning it as my vacation home. My home away from home.

After oooing and ahhhing over this cute block I set to work on making my block for this quilt. I wanted something hanging on a clothes line. While sketching clothes on a piece of scratch paper an idea came to me.... why not a little quilt. I pulled out my drawer of half square triangles made back in the day before I learned this method of making the little guys.

I grabbed a bunch of matching ones that were about 1" square. I know I'm crazy. I sewed them into a little quilt that I raw edge appliqued onto my background along with some posts for my clothes line. Added my scrappy borders.

Added these two blocks to the rest of my little pretties.

Now I just need to decide on borders. Any suggestions?

My Oh My

My oh my I've been having fun in my sewing room making this months bee blocks. Lauren is doing an ABC quilt and asked me to do the letters M and Y. Which worked out perfect for my post title and they were fun to make to boot.

In my Anything Goes Bee Kandra asked for a blue,green and grey block. This is what I came up with. Can't wait to see what her quilt looks like. Lovin' this color combination.

Valerie sent instructions for this great block. I see more of these in my future. So ideal for a great scrap quilt.

Jenniffer gave instructions for this sweet little block. I'm looking forward to seeing the pattern it creates when they are all put together.

And finally a little siggy block that I still need to sign.

Leaders Enders Step one

As promised here is the first step in the Free Four All leaders and enders quilt. First off for a 56"x 64" quilt like the one here, you will need 448- 1 1/2" squares in your chain fabric (I'm using black) and 448- 1 1/2" squares from assorted scraps.

Sew a chain fabric to one of your scrappy fabrics to make a little two patch. Press your seams all toward the chain fabric or the scrappy fabric depending on which is darker. But you do want to press all of them the same way so they will but up against each other nicely in the next step.

Next sew your two patches into four patches as shown.

You should have 224 of these little beauties when you are done. If you want to adjust the size of your quilt note that each square finishes at 8" and there are 8- 1 1/2" chain squares and 8- 1 1/2" scrappy squares in each block.

Since this is a leaders and enders quilt and you will be sewing other wonderful projects while you make this one I'm giving you a little time to finish this step. I'll post the next step on the first Friday in November.

After polling friends and family the winning arrangement of my leaders and enders quilt is the diamonds.

The blocks are now all sewn together. It's been quilted with simple x's. And the binding is on. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. There are so many options for this simple block I think I might start another as my next leaders and enders project. I might do the next one with black as the chain and brights everywhere else. Would anyone like to join me? I think it might be fun as a sew a long. At the end we can all share how we put the blocks together. There are so many other ways that the ones I showed here. Well what do you say are you up for a little sew along? If there's interest I'll start instructions Friday.

More Quilty Hugs

Have you noticed the quiltometer has been on the rise. It's a wonderful thing! And I wanted to share a few of the lovelies that are responsible for that rise. Look at the sweet nine patch made by my friend, Vivan. Vivan is amazing every month at guild meeting she has at least one new quilt for this great cause.

These next two were donated at the Utah Quilt Guild's annual Quilt fest. I don't know who made them as they appeared on my table unannounced. This cute yellow, green and purple quilt is so happy. It is sure to brighten some one's day. I love they way leaves were appliqued out of the center fabric into some of the borders.

And this stunning turquoise and brown quilt is just fabulous. Isn't that border amazing?

Thank you everyone who has made a quilt for Happy Chemo. I know you are helping to ease the pain of cancer and bring comfort as well.

Life's A Dance

On Monday my dear friend, Kalyn's grandmother passed away. She had suffered from alzheimer's for the past several years. The family asked that in lieu of flowers food be donated to the local food bank or a donation be made for alzheimer research. So I decided to make this quilt and donate it to The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative in honor of her grandmother.

Her grandmother loved to dance. She was one of the dancing grannies. And her and her hubby went dancing every weekend. It was the one thing she never forgot. So I appliqued a silohette of two people dancing before a rising and or setting sun to represent her wonderful life and her love of dancing. And although she is in a better place she will be missed.

Free and Easy

I took a machine quilting class while I was at Quilt Fest last week. I throughly enjoyed it. Lisa Brothman was the teacher and she did a beautiful job. We started with our name and then she gave us other designs to try. Some came easy others not so much as you can see from this sample.

But by the end of class I was feeling much better about my free motion quilting and was enjoying playing with the many designs she taught.

One of my favorite parts about the class was when she taught bobbin drawing. What a fun way to use heavier threads and get a new effect on your quilting projects. I see a lot more of this in my future.

Getting Caught Up

I've been missing in action here on the blog and at home. I had a little escape to the Utah Quilt Guild's annual Quilt Fest. I meant to get some posts up before I left but obviously that did not happen. I was busy getting things ready for a class I was taking, hand work ready to do while I volunteered, lists for the family to make sure things ran smoothly while I was away, and a few projects to work on in my spare moments.

Speaking of lists I had to laugh when a young mother in my class said her hubby forgot to take her son to preschool. And again when in a lecture by Sally Collins and she mentioned a lady in one of her classes that had left such detailed lists on what her hubby was to do while she was gone that when she called home he said he didn't have time to talk to her, it wasn't on the list.

So besides getting in some good laughs, learning new things, and making new friends. I was able to get caught up on my 15 minute play BOM blocks.

They were really fun to make and caught the eye of several quilters in the open sew area while I worked on them.

I'm thinking I might go back a redo a few of my earlier ones. Because even though I like the blocks I feeling that I want them all to have the same background fabric.

Then to figure out how to put them together and have the quilt done by Dec. for the challenge and voting. Weather I win in the challenge or not I'll be a winner with this happy scrappy quilt.

Salsa

Saturday was salsa day at our house. If you've read my blog for very long you know my boys love salsa. A bag of chips, a pint of salsa makes for one teenage boys afternoon snack. So we need lots of salsa. Gotta keep those boys growing, cause 6 feet tall is just not big enough, hee hee. So we picked, chopped, simmered and stirred this big pot of salsa.

I joked with Alex that next year we wouldn't have to make as much cause he would be away at school. 'Nope, just means you'll have to make me my own personal supply.'

To which I replied 'I'd give him the recipe and he could make his own.'

He challenged me to a salsa cook off.

'OOOOOO, I'm up for that', I said.

So the challenge is on. I figure I win either way. 'Cause it's one less pot of salsa I have to make.

As requested my salsa recipe (remember nothing is set in stone here. Adjust to your own liking or to what you have on hand. Heaven knows I do.)

10 hot peppers

35 lbs. tomatoes

6 onions

3 green peppers

1 garlic clove

3 Tbs. oragino

3 Tbs. cumin

1 bunch cilantro

1 c. sugar

1/2 c. salt

1 c. vinager

Chop up veggies. Add herbs, sugar, salt and vinager. Cook until thick. Process in pint jars for 20 min.

Enjoy it really is yummy!

Serendipity

Remember when I made these blocks? I thought they would look good as alternate blocks in a simple appliqe project I was working on. But they were to busy so I needed to find another home for them. Finding the Good

It's been a little while since I did a find the good post. But with yesterday being the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 I wanted to remember some of the good that came from that tragedy.

Those that turned on evil forces to save others and ultimately gave there lives in doing so. Those that rushed into burning building with only the thought of helping those in need. Those that gave blood and prayed for the victims and their loved ones. I remember the comfort that came to me in the days following this atrocity when I saw America pull together and help each other. To know that although there are very evil men in the world as a race there is still a lot of good.

I don't know if you know it or not but yesterday millions gathered to do good deeds. Some believe it was the biggest day of charitable acts in America's history. Once again it does my heart good to see the good in mankind. And gives me hope that one day we will all learn to live in peace.

Ott Light

Every month my local quilt guild awards the Ott Light. I wish it were one of those wonderful lights but it is this little lightbulb looking container and some candy. The recipient, me this month, must finish something to bring to the meeting next month. Well, as you can see I've eaten the candy. That was the easy part.

Now to figure out which of these UFO's will be my finish for next month.

Abundance

If your kitchen counter looks like mine you are enjoying an abundance of fresh veggies right now. One of my favorite things about summer is fresh veggies. There is nothing better than a vine ripened tomato.

But there are times when I wonder how do we eat all this before it goes bad. I do can salsa. My boys will go through a jar of salsa in one sitting. So this is a must and it takes care of the peppers and tomatoes. I love pickles but the rest of my family are not fans so it hardly seems worth it. And when I do make them I don't always finish all the jars before it's summer again and I have a bumper crop of cucumbers again. You may ask why I plant them. Well, while my family does not like pickles they do really like cucumbers. So a lot just get eaten with salt or ranch. But the counter was getting full so I went to Allrecipes.com. Oh how I love this site. You can type in the ingredients you have and it finds recipes for you. Just look at this yummy salad I found for dinner last night.

Mandarin Chicken Pasta Salad

Not only was it super yummy and healthy for our dinner. It used up a lot of those delicious fresh veggies.

Some of my children think it is mean. But I feel it is a gentle reminder that we should be nice and make things pleasant for others, and if we can't it's time for a little time out until we can.

Fortuitous Mistake

My plan for these blocks was to use as sashing between some simple applique blocks that I had made. But when I put them all together it was way to busy.

They were to cute to just scrap so the wheels in my head began to turn and and idea began to form.

So I'm making more blocks to build the creation growing in my head.

Now instead of just one quilt I'll have two. Now isn't that a fortuitous mistake?

Dream Big

I've been working on my Dream quilt. And oh has it been fun. I perused my Freddy and Gwen Collaborate Again book for block ideas. I've added a few baskets.

A churn dash

And flying geese.

Threw them together with the blocks I had already made and the top of my Dream quilt is done.

It's just bigger than 60"x 72". And believe it or not I still have blue scraps left.

A Good Team

Pep talks have been given, lunches packed, and everyone sent on their merry way. School is back in session and my quiet mornings have once again replaced with the rush of a family of six getting ready for the day. May they each have a great day; learning, making new friends and finding hidden talents to develop. That this year may be a great success for the Bailey team.

Speaking of teams my bloggy friend, Deanna and I make a pretty good one. She has been supplying tops, backs and binding for quilts for Happy Chemo.

While I provide the batting and quilting. These two quilts are ones that we have put together to bring a little joy to someone in need.

This sweet one her daughter made to donate. Isn't that so sweet? Didn't she do a lovely job? My friend and neighbor, Rella tied it for me. I thought photographing it in front of DD playhouse was the perfect setting. I probably should have moved our bikes but I stubbed my toe just as DD was leaving for school and it hurts so needless to say I didn't move the bikes.

Hope everyone has a great back to school! Go team!

Exciting News

I have some exciting news. I'm so giddy I can barely get my fingers to work to let you know. I knew back in May that McCalls wanted this quilt for their magazine but imagine my surprise when my friend Cheryl facebooked me congrats that my quilt was on the cover of McCalls along with this link. I could hardly believe it. And the truly great thing is that it's coming out just in perfect time for my sister, Julie's, fabric line Circa 1934. That will be in stores soon.

A Little of This and A Little of That

This not so little block 20"x30" was great fun to make. I followed this tute from Paige, for whom the block is for. I learned a few things along the way and believe if I were to make another I would do a better job. This one has a few extra seams. And the blue dots next to the red flower are kind of close, but other than that I think it turned out fairly well.

I like the way the negative space sets off the different prints. Letting you show off a little of this great print and a little of that great print.

Deanna is a dear bloggy friend. She has donated several tops to Happy Chemo. I appreciate her generosity. Well, she just did a wonderful review on my Harvest Sky pattern. The quilt you see in my header. You should check out her beautiful rendition of this scrappy quilt. Thanks Deanna for the kind words and the beautiful quilt tops for Happy Chemo!

Being in a bee brings me so much joy. From stretching myself to make new blocks and try to methods, to adding to my scrap bins with generous quilters that share the leftovers from the blocks I get to make for them. And probably the all time best is when you get to be queen and everyone so kindly makes a block for you. June was my month in A Notion Or Two Bee. I asked for a block with an appliqued center followed by a scrappy border. Now I love all the blocks I've received these ones have special meaning.

This guitar has special meaning. Valerie found out that my boy play guitar and made it for me. Little did she know that when my hubby and I were dating he used to play the guitar and sing to me. So this was the perfect addition to my quilt.

This sweet bicycle from Tracy reminds me of the fun bike rides I have taken with my hubby and DD. Another perfect addition to my quilt.

And this ice cream cone by Michelle captures what my hubby believes is my favorite food. So of course it's a favorite.

I have one more block on the way plus mine to make. (I would make mine if I could remember if mine is suppose to have a green or a white background. Silly me I forgot.) But I'm sure to find out soon and then I'll be able to finish this so fun quilt from my lovely bee mates. Thank you ladies.

Beating the Blues

A while back I started Victoria's inspiration challenge. I began with the word DREAM and my blue scraps. I had just finished the book Dream when Your Feeling Blue by Elizabeth Berg. So that became the theme for my quilt. Not to mention I really like the song Dream. Well this project sat for a while while other things came to the for front.

But the other day I needed some mindless sewing so I started making this wonky log cabin blocks. And that got me thinking I really need to get going on this quilt. So I added the words WHEN YOUR FEELING. I'm still debating whether I will do the word BLUE or just let the color of the quilt take care of that. Suggestions are welcome.

Then after making these star blocks for a bee I'm in I decided my blue quilt needed a few and made these.

I see this quilt getting much bigger. Heaven knows I have enough blue scraps to make that happen.

Getting Ready

We've had a busy summer. Trips, first time jobs, swim lessons, driver's ed, scout camp, and boating have made it fly by. Signs that school will be starting soon have begun to appear. We got a letter from DD teacher letting us know what school supplies to buy. N's schedule arrived for high school. And Alex and Josh are all registared for college. In twelve days summer ends and school begins. And while I'm sad that our summer is coming to an end. I'm looking forward to not living in my car taking kids here and there. In prep for this change DD, N and I went shopping for clothes and supplies. Then today while DD went boating with friends and N was at driver's ed I made another back pack for DD.

Scrappy Postage Stamp Star Tute

A while back Mary, sorry I don't know if she has a blog, emailed me asking how to make this block. I promised her a tute. I've been very slow getting to it but as promised here it is.

You will need 36- 1 1/2" squares, 4- 4" squares cut on diagonal once for star points, a 7 1/4" square cut on diagonal twice for flying geese units with star points and 4- 3 1/2" squares for corners around star.

First sew your 36- 1 1/2" square into 6 rows of six. Press these in opposite directions so the rows can but up against each other.

Sew rows together to make 36 patch.

Sew one of the 4" triangles to a 7 1/4" triangle as shown. Do this with remaining 3- 7 1/4" triangles.

Next sew the remaining 4" triangles to the opposite side of the 7 1/4" triangles to make 4 flying geese units.

Arrange units into star as shown. Sew into rows. Then sew rows together.

Your block should measure 12 1/2". I made 12 for this quilt. I then made two piano keyboard borders that measured 48 1/2" and two that measured 60 1/2". Then I used this tute to make the mitered corners. Hope this helps Mary. Let me know when you make yours. I would love to see it.

Finding good Homes

As I've always said quilter's are generous people. And as such I've received a lot of fabric, blocks and abandoned projects from them as I've worked to meet my Quilt Hugs for Happy Chemo quest. Yesterday a few more of those generous quilters helped me find good homes for a few of these orphans. These 16 patches went together nicely with a bit of Kona blue I had.

These bow ties, from Jan, along with some sashing from some fabric my sister's fabric just need a border to be to the flimsey stage.

This discarded project just need a few more blocks sewn and a border added.

Now I just need to get them quilted or tied. I have some friends that will help me and then they can go to a loving home.

And now a home for the charm pack from last weeks give away. Sarah guessed 240. I think she has been watching the quiltometer. For she was right on. Send me your snail mail my dear friend and I'll get the charm pack in the mail for you. Thank you to everyone that participated. It was great fun reading your guesses.

Blocked

Between being Mom's Taxi service and DD's quilt on the design wall I'm not getting anything big done. But I have got some bee blocks done for this month. First up are Jodie's for Twist on Tradition Bee.

These were quick, easy and fun. She is going to have a beautiful quilt.

Next up are these for Kathy from Twice As Nice Bee. She sent beautiful Joel Dewberry fabric and let us make whatever 12" block we would like. This one happened as an experiment. I had leftover 3 1/2" strips from the Dutchmen's puzzle I also made so I started playing with them. Adding from more of the beautiful fabric and this is what happened.

And finally the Dutchmen's Puzzle. It is one of my favorite blocks so I just had to make it.

Now hopefully some day soon DD will finish the last 7 rows of her quilt and I will get my design wall back. So I can start putting some of my bee blocks together.

I'm Doing A Happy Dance ~You Can Too Giveaway

Earlier in the week I got a call from Barbara Murdock, a former president of the Utah Quilt Guild, letting me know that she had 10 large bags full of quilts for Happy Chemo. Man was I excited! It took me until now to get up to her place to collect them. And when I got there, there weren't just 10 bags but 12! Barbara had gone to Cali on a trip so her hubby and I stuffed my Suburban from front...

to back with quilts. There was just room for me. And I had to open one of the bags and stuff the quilts in holes I could find so I could see out the passenger side window to drive down the canyon on my way home.

It's been a dream of mine since I started this to be able to fill my Suburban with Quilty Hugs and today I DID IT!!!! So to celebrate I'm having a give away. What happened to the lazy days of summer? July is almost over and I'm yet to find them. N is in driver ed and taking a photo shop class and needs rides to and from. (He gets to drive but until he gets his license he needs me in the car.) Josh got stung by a bee while riding his motorcycle home from work. I gave him benadryl and claritin and after dinner he fell asleep. I guess between working all day and the benadryl he was pretty wiped out. When he woke up the next morning to go do work his one eye completely swelled shut and the other was not far behind, poor guy. So I made an appointment with the doctor. After some steroids and a more powerful histamine the swelling has come down a lot and he can see again. But all this running has left little time for sewing. I was however able to squeeze in these two 15 minute play blocks.

A good stress release after driving with a new driver and visiting the doctor.

Love Is In The Air

Love is in the air as evidenced by the amount of wedding invitations on my fridge at the moment. Neighbors, family, I even have friends with children getting married. Does that mean my children could be getting married soon? I can't be that old. They were just babies. At any rate, in an attempt to keep up with them all. I've been busy sewing more stuck on you dishtowel sets.

Don't they look so happy on my neighbor's clothes line.

May they add a dash of color to small newly wed apartments. As they sit privy to wonderful life experiences that small apartment kitchens get to behold; new diner recipes (success and otherwise), cookie baking, dirty dishes that lead to sudsy bubble fights, late night studying, etc. What joy is in store for them and their recipients.

Helping Me Bring Happiness

My first visit to the chemo lab, like anyone else was scary. I had gone in for what I thought was a routine blood check only to find out that my counts were dangerously low. The doctor said that they had found that Retuxun, a chemo drug they use for leukemia, had helped other ITP patience. He wanted me to try it immediately. So I found myself in the chemo lab. I was worried about what this meant for me and when I found out how long the treatment was I worried whether I would be home when my kids got home. Then in pops Ginger, bald and boobless, smiling and say how cancer sucks and we need to do something to make it fun. Then before her treatment she handed out prizes. She really did bring a little happiness to the chemo lab and for a while cancer sucked a little less. That was about five years ago. Now Happy Chemo is nation wide. And thanks to my quilt guild 7 more people will receive quilts as their prizes.

Just look at the beauties they made for this great cause.

A Little Fairy Tale

My Baby's Making Her First Quilt

DD has decided to do her room in her favorite colors, purple and green. We've painted the walls, made curtains and now she needs a new quilt to match. Since she has made pillow cases, a back pack, and curtains for her playhouse. I figured she could make a quilt for her bed. We went through my stash and picked out greens and purples. I didn't have a lot of purple so we got to go fabric shopping a pick out a few. Here are all her pretty fabrics.

I figured my Charming Quilt pattern was a good beginner quilt. No bias edges and no seams to match. We've arranged the blocks on the design wall.

Now she just needs to start sewing. I'm so excited for her. Hoping she loves it as much as I do.

They All Live Together In A Little Crooked House

While making fabric for the blocks in the previous post I noticed that some of the pieces were looking like houses. So for fun I started making a few. These little guys were the first. My engineer son thinks the one on the right is not a house, but I must admit it is my favorite.

It reminds me of this nursery rhyme:

There was a crooked man

And he walked a crooked mile

He found a crooked six pence

Upon a crooked stile

He bought a crooked cat

That caught a crooked mouse

And they all lived together

In a little crooked house.

When I was finished with my 15 minute play blocks I had also finished these crooked little houses. I might have to make a whole crooked little village.

From Small and Simple Things

I've been playing in my scrap bin again. Taking all the little pieces, sewing them into a bigger piece, cutting them up again and sewing them into blocks.

I'm really liking the way the pieced fabric looks with the solid reading background.

It is making me very excited for this quilt.

I've been making lots of flying geese in different sizes and fabrics. Using this method.

Then I put them together in this Dutchmen's Puzzle Block

And this just random flying geese block.

These two will be going to Shannon in my Twice is Nice Bee. But I had so much fun making them I see a flying geese quilt in my future.

Making Mountains out of Mole Hills

When I saw this eagle applique at International Quilt Market this spring, I knew it was just what I needed for N's eagle quilt. Next he and I went to the fabric shop to buy batiks for the sun. I had the blues for the sky. Next I grabbed my brown scrap bin and started piecing the bits together in classic Victoria style, to make a mountain.

I still have a little more mountain to make. And then to decide on borders. Any suggestions?

Busy Bee-ing

I've been busy running kids to various summer fun. But I have managed to get my bee blocks done for this month. Here are Liz's blocks for Twist on Traditon.

And Jen's blocks for Sew Bee Wonky I have a little more of the blue so I might make another smaller wonky star. After all they are so fun to make.

And these cute checker board blocks are for Anna in my Twice as Nice Bee.

I had a little hiccup with these. She had sent 2 1/2" stirps and asked for checker board blocks. So I started cutting 2 1/2" blocks. Just as I was starting to sew them together I read through the directions and found that she wanted the blocks to be cut to 2" squares. Fourtunately I had enough fabirc to make both blocks despite my little mess up.

Note to self Always read directions first. Or as my sixth grade teacher Mr. Moss used to say, "If all else fails read the directions." When will I ever learn?

Graduation Celebration

To celebrate Joshua's Gradution we took a trip to Cali. We boarded the train in Salt Lake and my sister picked us up in Emeryville. It was a relaxing, fun way to travel.

I was able to read two books and bind my new Maverick Star quilt.

While in Cali we spent a day in San Fransico. The ferry ride and tour of Alcatraz was a highlight.

We had lunch at Hard Rock Cafe. Seeing pictures, guitars, and memoriblia of some of his favorite rock stars made this the perfect choice. Although I would have liked clam chower in a sour dough bread bowl.

Next we went to the aquarium. Were we got to touch sting rays and sharks ( little baby sharks but still cool)

The next day Josh got to tour Google with his Uncle who works there. This is something my boys look forward to and really enjoy. After the Google tour we went to a tech museum. This is Josh manning a probe to do repairs in space. He was pretty good at manuvering it. Maybe NASA is in his future.

We had a great trip! Looking forward to catching up on everyone's blogs.

The Strings that Bind

When I wasn't teaching classes in Panguitch I was begging and bribing people to make simple string blocks for Happy Chemo. I was blesses ans one lady made a whole row. Mika, a ten year old girl, who was friends with Dani and Bri from my class made three. And because people were so generous with their time and talents Iwas able to make this quilt top.

Plus I have enough quilt blocks to almost make another. Thank you to everyone who helped! I know this quilt will bring comfort to someone in need. And all the other orphan blocks, fabric, and batting that were donated and the groups that have now caught the vision of Happy Chemo and are busy making more quilts for this good cause will soon have the quiltometer on the rise.

It's Like Family

I had a delightful time in Panguitch. Everyone there is so friendly so that even though my friend, Marilyn could not make it. I never felt lonely. It's like everyone is family. I even got to meet a sister sewist and blogger, Em Now that was a great treat. Here we are together with my Maverick Star Quilt. The great Em&Em dual. And because of a little mix up I got to meet up with her again on the way to my parents. Now that I know how close she lives to my mom and dad we are planning other meet ups.

Speaking of family my Maverick Star class was full of families. Here is Shirley and her daughter. Sorry I can't remember her name.

And there was Dani and her daughter, Bri. They were there with Dani's mom, and other daughter, Regan, and a friend and her daughter, Mika. I spent quite a bit of time with this fun group. And they generously shared their picnic with me on Saturday.

Lisa, who by the way, brought some real fun music to class.

They were a lot of fun. I really enjoyed having them in my class. It really was a fun weekend.

Because I'm in Panguitch and not at home. Because I just need to bind my new Maverick Star for my class tonight. And because I forgot the cord to my camera to load the picture for my New Maverick Star or any other picture for that matter. I'm posting a picture of my old Maverick Star

And repeating my tutorial on how to make your binding fit perfect every time.
Leaving a 6" tail begin sewing binding on. Continue sewing binding around quilt. Leave a 10-12" gap between the beginning of the binding and the end.
Finger bind until ends meet. Fold eachside back on th itself. Leaving a 1/2" space in between.
Trim ends so that from the 1/2" gap they are half of the width of your binding. (ie.. 1 1/4" if binding is 2 1/2")
Sew a diagonal seam to join binding ends. Trim to 1/4" Wha la your binding fits perfectly. Sew into place. You are now ready to turn and hand stitch in place.

Quilty Hugs

To my great delight look what I found on my front pourch recently. A big box filled with these quilty hugs for Happy Chemo lovingly made by Sue.

Love the lady bugs! The back is minky and nice a cuddly. Some little girl is sure to find comfort under this cutie.

This subtle stunner is sure to warm the heart and bring a smile to person that receives it.

Along with this batik beauty.

All of Sue's quilts are beautifully quilted. I was in awe of her skill.

Bloom and Grow

DD had her last Buy and Sell day at school.

We made these fun fabric flowers.

They were quick and easy and sold well among the girls in her class.

Last night Josh graduated! Yeah! We are so proud of him!

N finished his Eagle project. Here he is with Ginger, the founder of Happy Chemo, he was able to donate more than 100 coloring books, crayons, and puzzle books to go to a children's cancer camp. Good job N!

Now we're ready for some summer fun!

The Process

First I made some fabric using Victoria's tutorial. I've made fabric before using a method my friend Sue taught me and while I like Sue's method. I found Victoria's liberating and I was able to use more odd shaped pieces. I really liked the result. (Forgot to take a picture of it) Now it's cut up and made into this block of Miki's. (The tutorial is here)

Now it will go in this little bin of favorite and orphan blocks that I'm collecting to make into a quilt similar to Victoria's 'Everthing But the Kitchen Sink Quilt' that I showed a few weeks ago on a Find the Good Post.

The bin is getting full. And each month I make another block from 15 minute play to add to the collection. I'm getting so excited to see how they will play together.

Proud Momma

With my Josh graduating and my N finishing up his Eagle Project, there just has not been a lot of time for me to sew. Instead I thought I'd use this chance to show off my talented kids. Below is Joshua playing on the potter's wheel. He is getting pretty good. I love all the pots he has made me.

Here is my N giving the wheel a go. He is new to it but is learning fast.

His passion is drawing. This is his final project for his art class.

This little elfin man was carved by my DD the last time we visit my mom and dad. I think she has some of my mom's great talent.

In fact, I think all my children do. So thankful for their artistic abilities and for a mother who taught me to develop mine so I could in turn teach my children.

(I didn't forget my Alex, but he's been so busy with his engineering degree that his artistic indevors have been put on the back burner. If you would like to see Alex's latest look here.

Quick Look And A Question

It is my turn to be the Queen Bee in my Sew Bee Wonky Group. I wanted a Valentine Quilt and took my inspiration from this quilt of Victoria's. The blocks have started to come in and I'm so excited! Here is a quick look at what I have so far.
Also on the design wall are these happy, wonky, maverick stars. I'm teaching I'm A Maverick Star and my Breathe quilt at Quilt Walk in a couple of weeks. There are a few openings if you would like to join me. I gave my Maverick Star quilt to a very courageous little boy and don't feel right about stealing even for a little while. You can read about him here. So I'm making another. It's good mindless sewing after a couple of busy stressful weeks. And I'm sure I can find this one a good home too when I'm done. Maybe another Happy Chemo Quilt.

Speaking of Happy Chemo you still have a few days to get your quilt in for a chance at a fat quarter stack. Email me if you need my address. Also there will be a room set up at Quilt Walk where you can help make quilts for this deserving cause. So in between classes you can join other great quilters having fun doing what you love, make a few new friends and help bring comfort to someone that is going through the not so fun experience of Chemo. Now for my question; I was visiting blogs yesterday and every time I went to leave a little love and encouragement Blogger had me popping up as anonymous. I tried to fix it but couldn't figure out how. The first couple of blogs I went to wouldn't allow anonymous comments so I gave up on leaving comments. Has this ever happened to you? What did you do to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

Better Late Than Never

With all the excitement around Market and working to get things done to display Julie's fabric the Bloggers Quilt Festival slipped my mind. That is until I say Amy at the meet up and started seeing all the beautiful quilts popping up on people's blogs. This is such a fun tradition I don't want to miss out on the fun. So I'm joining in. I figure, better late than never.

The quilt I chose this time is my Kelidoscope quilt. I chose it for many reasons. The main one being that I made it with a dear friend. She and I sewing in my sewing room chating and laughing will always be a charished part of this quilt. So not only does it hold the memories of all the scraps of every quilt that came before it but the fond memories of sewing with my friend.

So that when I wrap up in it I'm reminded of so many good things, how could it not be a favorite?

Find the Good

As you know International Quilt Market was this last weekend. Well on Saturday evening there was a blogger's meet up and I'm so glad I went. I got to meet in person a few people that I've only know through the Internet. And can I tell you it was delightful. I remembered my camera but to my dismay I left the memory card at home. So a lot of good it did me. I still want to share with you the wonderful people I met so with their permission I'm sharing their beautiful work for this weeks Find the Good.
I started blogging about two and half years ago. Jacquie's blog was one of the first I found, and I'm so glad I did. I have learned so many wonderful things from this very talented lady. I hoping next year we will be able to have her come and teach at Utah Quilt Guild Annual meeting. Wouldn't that be awesome! I definitely think so. I will never for get when she made this fun little neighborhood and imagined various bloggers as neighbors. I was thrilled to be among them living in the little apartment building. Meeting her in person was fabulous.

I also got to meet Victoria. Another great experience for me. I couldn't believe it when I saw her from across the room. And was so excited when I finally made it to her and was able to introduce myself. I love her whimsy in piecing. She has helped me play and experiment and get outside the box. So thankful for all I've learned from her. It was hard for me to pick just one of her fabulous quilts. I chose her Everything But the Kitchen Sink because it inspires me so. I've started collecting blocks to make my own.

While chatting with these fine ladies I met Shae from The Empty Bobbin. Isn't that such a great name? How many miles have you sewn on a empty bobbin. Me? More than I want to admit. I had never been to her site before Saturday. It's a treasure let me tell you. Make sure you go check it out. I chose her fun sewing machine cover to highlight this lovely lady's talent. I so need one of these.
There were also familiar faces, like Katy From The Blue Chair She is one of the talented ladies from the Salt Lake City Modern Quilt group. She is bubbly and fun. Don't you just love these cute little elephants she made recently? It was nice to talk with her. Looking forward to seeing her again this Thursday at quilt group.

There were many other talented people there. Wish I could highlight everyone.

Circa 1934

I'm sorry to be posting late. I told you I would post more projects I made with my sister, Julie's new line for Moda. But blogger was down this morning when I tried. And I spent the rest of the day at International Quilt market. What a treat! It's so great to have Julie for my sister!

Well on to the fun things I was able to create with Julie's Circa 1934. First I made a simple checkbook cover. I fussy cut this fun saying off her project board fabric. I thought it was perfect for this little project.
Next I made a little change purse, also fussy cut from the project board fabric. There are so many possibilities with this project board fabric. I also covered a button to go on the zipper pull.

I used four more of the project board sayings for this fun bag. It has lots of pockets inside.

Finally, I used the typewriter keys and covered buttons to make this bracelet for my great sister.

Thanks Julie for this great opportunity. I really enjoyed working with your fabric.

Can You Spare A Dime

It's time for spring market. I had planned on having a booth this year since it's in my own backyard. But life through me a curve ball. And when it was time to be reserving a booth I was making weekly visits to the chemo lab. Whimp that I am I didn't dare commit my time and money when I didn't know if my body was going to cooperate. I had decided being small and selling local wasn't so bad. The shops I sell to are wonderful, the owners talented caring people, and I enjoy my visits with them. Still I was a little disappoionted. So imagine my excitement when my sister, Julie, asked me to design a quilt for her new fabric line, Circa 1934. Cosmo Cricket is now designing for Moda and I must say Moda did a great job with Julie's newest creation. Going with the 1934 theme I created 'Can You Spare A Dime'. I had fun playing with the circle theme that is present in this new line, from the old fashioned typewriter keys to my beloved polka dots. So I appliqued circles on point and continued the theme in the quilting then because it felt right I put on a dotty binding. This was a great line to work with. In fact I'll be showing you on Friday a few other creations that I made with Julie's great fabric.

Joyous Web of Color and More

I'm so in love with this quilt. As it grew on the design wall it lit a fire in me to make all my blocks. It was so fun to watch my scraps become something beautiful. Not that there isn't a certain amount of beauty in a bin of scraps. If it weren't for other obligations this quilt would have a stop border and I would be working on a nice scrappy border. But soon I plan on making this a finish. I can't wait to spread it out at the park while my little girl plays and read a book. Doesn't that sound perfect? Now a special thanks to Lyn for this sweet little quilt for Happy Chemo.

Blast From the Past

I've been busy working on things I can't show at this time so I thought I would share some great old quilts that were shown at my last quilt guild meeting. I like to draw inspiration from old quilts when creating new ones. I know that others do too. So here is a little inspiration. I think this would be so pretty in some Kaffe or Amy Butler. Two tone quilts always strike me. It just amazes me all the interest that can be created with just two colors.

This stunning double wedding rings makes me want to grab my scraps and go to town. This quilt is on my someday list. Oh that there were more hours in the day.

Something for Nothing

Look what my mailman delivered yesterday. I'm thrilled! I love this sweet little quilt made special for me by Cathy at Big Lake Quilter for Victoria's Something for Nothing Challenge. I love the sweet little house, the wonky tree and the sunshine. I love that she took time to hand quilt it for me. How cool is that?

Not only did she make me the cute quilt, I also got a new pincushion. (You can never have to many of those.) A fun mug rug, for me to set my cup of cocoa on. And a cute little card. Thank you Cathy for your generosity. Receiving this great little package was just the motivation I needed to finish finish my something for nothing quilt. I quilted waves in the ocean, sunbeams around the sun and clouds in the sky. Now it's headed to it's new home.

I hope it's new owner will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.
