My Parents Went On A Cruise And I Got...

For Christmas my parents went on a cruise.  They flew to Florida to board their cruise.  Visited several ports.  Went through the Panama Canal.  Hit a few more ports and ended up in Cali.  In there travels they found me this sweet little treasure.
It is hand stitched and I'm totally in love with it.
When my dad dropped it off he also brought me more Blue Bird flour sacks.  I really need to come up with an idea of how to use them.  Anyone up for a challenge?  I have more bags than I would need for a king size quilt.  And since I do not have a bed that big I don't need that many.  Mom will continue to use Blue Bird flour so I see more coming my way.  I'm thinking it might be fun to do a challenge using a Blue Bird flour sack in a quilt.  Anyone up for it?  I'll supply the sack.  You supply the creativity.  We'll set a finish date and have a linky party.  If there is enough interest we will proceed.

Trip Down Memory Lane Thanks to SS

Scrap quilts always make me sentimental.  Going through the scrap bin and remembering quilts past makes for a fun trip down memory lane.  As I prepare for my first Scrap Squad quilt I decided to go with a  masculine theme.  Since my boys all want this quilt I thought I would play with the same color scheme.
I pulled a bunch of red.  Bits from my Florence quilt, a Christmas project, and a tribute quilt to my Grandpa Harry.

Then some grays.  Leftovers from my Double Wedding Ring, Merry Jane, and a few more.
Finally a few blacks.  Not many scraps left there.  I used most of them up in Be the Good.  I might not even use these.  Now that I see them all together I'm worried they won't read dark enough and be to similar to the grays.
What are your thoughts?  Should I use them or just use a tone on tone black?

Quilting A Gaggle Of Geese

As you know I've been introduced to Triangles on A Roll.  I've always like flying geese and had methods for making them that I used in my Wild Goose Chase tutorials.  But the rolls are so slick and the points so nice that I've been making a gaggle of geese.  And with all these geese I've had the opportunity to practice more free motion quilting.  I found this design on pintrest and thought I'd give it a go.
In between my rows of geese I've been practicing feathers.

Practice, practice practice.  I'm slow but I think I'm getting better.

Scrappy Play and Free Motion Quilting

After the precision piecing with the braid it was time for a little play.  I grabbed my scrap bins and with this as inspiration I began to play.
I wanted to add some quilting so I decided to try several free motion quilting designs.

Then I added a button and grabbed this little frame I found at a garage sale this last fall and put it to good use.
Pretty pleased with the results.
I'll have my eyes peeled at thrift stores and garage sales (when it warms up or when I'm visiting my parents) in future for more cute little frames.
Linking up with Sarah to get a little Whoop Whoop!

In playing with assembly ideas for the braids I decided to cut me some triangles

and make some geese.

I made the geese using some of the TOAR  that I used for the braids.  The thing I love most about using TOAR is the precision you get.  Nice pointy points.  I thought I would hate ripping the paper off, which is why I do not like paper piecing.  But thanks to a new season of Downton Abbey I have not minded one bit.  It gives me something productive to do while I indulge in this guilty pleasure.

From Strings to Braids

My cool strings have become some very cool braids.
I have six of these braids each 44" long.  I am now playing with how to put them together.  Stay tuned for more progress

Merry Jane

I recently finished quilting and binding my Merry Jane quilt.  It features my sister, Julie's, fabric line, Baby Jane for Moda.
I sketched up several quilting ideas before I chose this one with leaves and a simple flower.

The pattern is available here if you are interested.  I'm linking up with Sarah to celebrate.

Quiltmaker Scrap Squad

At the end of last year my friend Ruth posted on facebook about Quiltmaker's Scrap Squad.  I told her I wanted to be apart of it.  She and my friend Suzy encouraged me to try.  So I did.
And guess what I made it!  WOW!!!!  I'm so excited.  This is going to be my year for scrap quilts.  Between teaching every month a new scrap quilt, and then making one for every issue of Quiltmaker,I'm hoping to make a dent in these lovely scraps.
Is that possible?
My fellow scrappers are:
Buff

Now hopefully the third time is a charm with the winner for the traveling stash.  Audrey from Quilty Folk you are the winner.  Please send me your snail mail and I'll get the traveling stash on it's way.

Cool Strings

I've pulled all my green, blue and purple strings from my strip bin.
It didn't make much of a dent.  Looks like I have more string quilts in my future.  Thank you Stephanie for your challenge.  I need it.
I trimmed all those strings into 1 1/4" strips

Then I used TOAR flying geese and braid roll to start making a few braids with my cool strings.

Be The Good

I wanted to have my Be The Good quilt to hang on the wall this January as my family and I were looking ahead to the new year and setting goals.  So in true Bailey fashion I put it off to the last minute to get it quilted and bond.  Maybe Alex is right when he says, "If you wait to the last minute it only takes a minute."  Well, it took more than a minute but on Dec. 30th and 31st I quilted and bond this little quilt.
Therefore I was able to put it up when I took down the Christmas row quilt.  Hope it's not so subtle message sinks in and my family looks for the good in the world and does their best be a part of that good.  (not that they aren't good now, just looking to do a little better in the new year.)

Dotty Stars

I received a fun little email recently from Lois, with this picture.  I just love when people share their quilts with me.  This one is from a pattern I did for Fons and Porter scrap quilts.  You can read about it here.    Lois made it bigger to go on her bed.  Didn't she do a lovely job?  Gotta love those dotty stars!
If you have made one of my patterns.  Send me a pic I'd love to see yours too.
An update on the traveling stash.  My winner did not have a blog and apparently that is necessary in winning.  So I've offered her another prize and have picked a new winner.  Drum roll please.  thrrrrrrrrrr!  And the winner is Ester F.  If you will please send me your snail mail I'll get it off to you.  Congrats hope you find some good treasures in there.

A Bushel and A Peck

I have always liked the song, I Love You A Bushel and A Peck.  I think it is such a happy fun song.  I feel the same way about my sister, Julie's fabric line Baby Jane.  So I combined the two and created this fun and happy quilt.
Featured in the current issue of Fon's and Porter's Easy Quilts.

Check it out when you have a minute.
Happy New Year!
Em
